Next week, on 29th March, Boston-based fiddle player and songwriter, Maura Shawn Scanlin (of Rakish and Rasa String Quartet) releases, “We’ve Got Our Friends,” her second single taken from her forthcoming self-titled album.
Scheduled to release on May 5, 2023, the album features a collection of newly composed fiddle tunes and songs influenced by traditional Celtic and American music which shaped Maura’s music style since childhood. “We’ve Got Our Friends” was arranged and written by Maura, accompanied by Conor Hearn and Steven Manwaring on guitars, the Rasa String Quartet, and Kat Wallace. The single was recorded at Dimension Sound Studios by Dan Cardinal, mixed by Dave Sinko, and mastered by David Glasser.

The past year has been a time full of life shifts and changes for me (and probably for all of us). I repeatedly find myself reorganizing priorities to find balance amidst the chaos of life, and without fail, I find my way back to the idea that our friendships can be some of the most meaningful parts of life. I am grateful to be a part of a wonderful community of musician friends; it is this community that gives me a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, and endless inspiration. This song came from a moment when I needed reminding of the most simple joys: friends, music, the sunrise, coffee in the morning…
I feel very lucky to have had the chance to record it with some of my dearest friends and musical collaborators.
From the start, ‘We’ve Got Our Friends’ is enveloped in a contemplative setting, enhanced by Maura’s gentle vocals and the empathetic string arrangements. With the lyrics: “we got our friends, we’ve got our music, and the promise of a sunrise to get us through the night,” it makes the ideal campfire song.
Just before we are treated to the beautiful sound of the Rasa String Quartet, Maura sings “So I’ll phone a friend, we’ll write a song, to remind me what is good when I forget.” A beautiful drop of respite in a chaotic world.
