‘To begin at the beginning: it is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black…’
We revisit the Welsh seaside village of Llareggub…the setting of Under Milk Wood, featuring Richard Burton. Naturally, there is a fair amount of Welsh music alongside other favourites, including a live recording of John Renbourn & Wizz Jones from their Joint Control album, recorded shortly before John Renbourn’s death in March 2015.
All those in the playlist have been featured on Folk Radio before except for one – “Gold Valley Bench” is Daniel Potter, who is a Thames and Bristol-based lock-keeper. You can hear the title track of his new album ‘Raining in Avon’ (out next month).
“Raining in Avon” is an album of exquisite lo-fi swan songs comes out on Undergrowth Records 19th April 2023. Wandering through the mud flats of Weston Super Mare and the cinema back lots of Bristol, this is an album of heartbreak and forgotten loners. If Townes van Zandt had lived to fight another day, this is the dreamy dusk he would have retreated to, waiting for the sun to rise over the discarded mattresses and bottles of Buckfast scattered across a seaside promenade.
Enjoy, and please consider supporting Folk Radio here.
