Today sees the release of Her Silver Spate, the latest single from Scottish folk trio Salt House, featuring Lauren Maccoll, Ewan Macpherson and Jenny Sturgeon. The single is taken from their new studio album ‘Riverwoods’ which is released on 10th March via Hudson Records (LP/SKY BLUE LP/CD/DL – Pre-Order here).
The single, Her Silver Spate, which also opens the album, begins with a sparkling intro, sounds mimicking the movement of a river before we hear their beautiful ode – ‘To see her is to know her, follow her winding way…’
“The song is an ode to our upland rivers, and the knowledge & power they carry with them on their down-stream journey”
As mentioned before on Folk Radio, alongside their individual solo projects, the songs of Salt House have always been firmly rooted in place, people and their shared love of the natural world. In his review of their studio album ‘Huam‘ (2020), Thomas Blake noted, “The lyrics visit the recurring theme of the warmth of home and hearth in contrast to the snow and tumult of nature, and there is a hint of eastern philosophy in the notion that the balance between the two is what’s important.”
The album is a musical response to the feature-length documentary of the same name made by rewilding charity ‘SCOTLAND: The Big Picture’, and also featured on Channel 5. This – their third release on Hudson Records with Andy Bell – is a collection of both songs and instrumentals inspired by the journey of the atlantic salmon and the much-needed biodiversity along our river systems. “I encourage you to immerse yourself in this beautiful album, to ‘feel’ it and, crucially, to hear its message.” Pete Cairns, Executive Director, STBP.
Riverwoods is available on CD, Signed CD, Black LP, Limited Edition Sky Blue LP, and Superfan bundles which include a signed limited edition lyric print. Salt House are once again supporting rewilding in the Highlands through Trees for Life.
