Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves are heading to the UK for a two-week tour in May 2023, hot on the heels of their appearances as guest stars on the Transatlantic Sessions live tour this February (read our review of the Celtic Connections Premiere). Allison and Tatiana are two of the most exciting musicians on the folk and roots scene, and the Canadian-American duo has been receiving considerable acclaim for their adventurous approach to traditional music over the last few years. Their 2022 release Hurricane Clarice has already garnered 2023 nominations from the JUNO Awards and the Canadian Folk Music Awards, in addition to enthusiastic reviews, including one from FRUK (see our review here).
The duo draws on a range of influences across folk, old time Americana and bluegrass, and they’ve long had a mission to highlight the diversity that’s always been there in traditional music, including the valuable but often overlooked contributions that female, LGBTQ, African-American and Indigenous musicians have made to American folk traditions. Their progressive approach is backed up by peerless musicianship and a hypnotic musical bond between the two players. Canadian banjoist Allison de Groot has made a name for herself as a member of Molsky’s Mountain Drifters and in her work with step dancer Nic Gareiss, while American fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves has performed and recorded with renowned musicians including Jake Blount, Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch. The two musicians certainly have a special musical connection which is thrilling to witness live.
