Our Song of the Day comes from Aisha Badru with her new single ‘Lazy River‘, taken from her forthcoming EP, Learning To Love Again, out June 2nd via Nettwerk. Wring about her last studio album, ‘The Way Back Home‘, Bob Fish wrote: “Badru has created a work that speaks to the things that make life special. To be truly successful, you need to find your own pathway, regardless of where it leads. It doesn’t matter how long the journey takes; you simply need to find your own truth.” That philosophy still seems to hold with Badru, who says of ‘Lazy River’.
“It’s this freeing of myself and allowing myself to try things that people would not expect of me,” she says of her vocals. “I feel more comfortable not meeting those expectations.”
On the songs meaning, she says:
Symbolically, water represents emotions, change, and adaptability. Over time, moving water dissolves or smooths whatever goes through it. ‘Lazy River’ is a song that offers the perspective of being patient with ourselves in regards to the healing process that occurs after losing someone we love. There is often a sense of urgency to feel better or to appear happy, which often leads to the suppression of unprocessed emotions. When we allow ourselves to fully feel and move through our emotions, it is then that we can truly be transformed by the experience for the better.
The pace of the song not only accentuates that slow movement suggested by the song title but also adds that deeper sense of purpose and intent that Badru speaks of above. She captures this so beautifully in the music and lyrics:
Time moves like a river, winding and slow
Holding on to you is helping me float
I drift in the breeze as your memory washes over me
I will let you go, eventually
All of these emotions and intent also run through the video, a creative team effort from Director Laura-Lynn Petrick, choreographer Nyda Kwasowsky and dancer Amara Barner. Watch it below.
