It has been five years since the last offering from the popular husband and wife duo Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, and their latest album proves a ‘tour de force’ of musical and lyrical surprises.
‘Almost A Sunset‘, their seventh album, is a collection of thoughtful, varied songs that range from reworked traditional ballads to the off-piste storytelling style that has become their trademark.
In an exclusive first showing on Folk Radio, the couple transport us to the South West with the gently evocative ‘Pew Tor’ – an ode to Kathryn’s favourite Tor on Dartmoor, a place of quiet contemplation.
Recorded at Devon-pace in their studio on Dartmoor over the course of a year, the couple explore favourite eccentric characters, childhood memories and deep emotion to pull together a collection of songs that demonstrates their musical versatility and a sharp interest in the world around them all wrapped up in their own unique perspective on the folk genre.
For this album, Kathryn and Sean were able to call on the talents of their teenage twin daughters, Poppy and Lily. Poppy sings backing vocals on the opening track ‘Eavesdropper’, whilst Lily’s artistic flare can be seen in the striking photography used for the album design. Kathryn says, ‘The girls have provided inspiration for many of our songs over the years but it lovely that they feel they can help us out in a more practical way as they grow older and their talents shine through’.
