Taken from his new ‘Covers’ EP (out now), watch Jack Rutter performing ‘Small Northern Town’ live. He shares: “In the mid-noughties, there was an amazing band on the Huddersfield music scene called Fourteen Corners; I adored this song of theirs as a teenager.”
We have previously declared Jack ‘Among Britain’s finest traditional singers’, but as many of you who have seen Jack live will know, he also enjoys doing the occasional cover. His covers, some familiar and others less so, are all part of the path he has travelled, but he still manages to make each song his own. After some persuasion from fans, he decided to record four of them.
This little EP is sure to delight many. There are some great numbers on there, including Peter Gabriel’s Solsbury Hill, the gorgeous The Queen of May from Yorkshire folk song collector Frank Kidson that Jack learned from Bryony Griffith‘s 2014 album Nightshade and a surprising Dwight Yoakam track, It Won’t Hurt (When I Fall Down From This Barstool).
The four tracks were all recorded live in the room and produced by Joe Rusby.
Produced by Joe Rusby, Mastered by Nick Cooke, and video by Northern Cowboy Films.
