As previously shared, on March 10th, the Hack-Poets Guild, a brand-new collaboration between three of the UK folk’s most unique and prestigious voices, Marry Waterson, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann are to release their high-concept debut album ‘Blackletter Garland’ on One Little Independent.
The album boasts twelve fascinating interpretations and original compositions that tell intricate tales of birth, love, conflict and death, with all the imagination of the folklore from which they’re based. This week they shared their new single, ‘Ten Tongues’, which is, once more, accompanied by another brilliant video from Marry Waterson who also wrote the song, inspired by a story that was collected by 18th-century Oxonian Percy Manning. “Birds build a nest in a rotting skull, it’s deliciously dark, but here we see a cycle of rebirth too,” Marry tells us. Fascinated by the origin of idioms ‘Laying The Ghost’ tells of spirits that are “read down” until they are small enough to be trapped in a box and laid in a body of water – Marry’s poetic lyrics and other-worldly voice forewarn as waters run dry and the spectre rises.
Ten tongues, ten tongues,
ten tongues in one head.
One went out to seek for bread,
to feed the living in the dead.
Ten Tongues is our Song of the Day.
