Inspired by Tom Cox’s short story of the same name, taken from his bestselling book Help The Witch, watch the stunning new video from Stick in the Wheel for Robot, taken from their latest album Endurance Soundly Caged, one of our Featured Albums of the Month which is also released today – Order it here.
In his review of the album, Thomas Blake describes the track as a creepy techno-folk-horror vignette, its mini-chapters punctuated by Carter’s proggy, semi-improvised guitars…It has the feel of John Cale’s The Gift transplanted to a wyrd sci-fi version of Merrie England. Read the full review here.
Nicola Kearey tells us: For this new recorded version, we asked Hastings-based Zeroh to make a video based on the narrative within the story.
ZEROH: The central character, the Robot, is constructed from LIDAR-scanning objects and tools on the beach in Hastings Old Town that belong to the ancient beach-launching fleet of fishermen there.
The Hastings fishermen are totally unique – a piece of living history dating back to the 11th century, and many of the fishermen still working the local waters can trace their family trees back to its inception. Notably, Europe’s largest beach-launched fleet, it’s the strongest fishing hub in the South East. Yet cultural significance does not guarantee commercial success – this once vital trade has found itself beset by mounting political, financial and social pressures, making business far from straightforward.
Robot was the first take of the first track from the Eastcote Studios recording sessions – legendary studios that Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter brought their touring band (Sian Monaghan and George Hoyle) to, capturing the vibe from their recent live shows.
