Roo Panes has shared a live session video to accompany his latest single, Suburban Pines, which was shot by Samuel Glazebrook in Lochaline, Scotland, overlooking the Sound of Mull. It really does set the scene for his new single, what he describes as a ‘real life ordinary story’; an ode to the magic of everyday life in quiet surroundings and a nostalgia trip through the memories attached to growing up in a small town.
The song paints a rich song narrative, talking to a younger self and reliving those distant urban memories through which is threaded a life-changing moment, a chance meeting – strangers ’til our stars aligned – with his future wife. As ever, Roo Panes, accompanied just on guitar and electric piano, played here by Josh Flowers, envelopes this song with deep warm sentiment and feeling. It’s the perfect winter song for a time when we slow down and reflect.
“This song is a really personal story of growing up in a small town, and finding beauty in the ordinary. It’s full of childhood memories, and moves as a timeline, following my journey back and forth until I met my wife in my hometown. I’ve been many places as a musician in my life, but I was struck by the fact that we met where it all began. We’d both lived down the road from each other, shopped at the same supermarket, walked on the same heath, but never met. It’s 17 verses long for a reason, as it’s not easy to write it in a paragraph – the images and thought patterns of home. But pine trees seemed to be the habitat for many memories looking back, and felt the right habitat for the story and song.”
The single is taken from his forthcoming album, ‘The Summer Isles’, due 24th March 2023 (pre-order here).
