This Friday (18th November), John Blek releases St. John’s Eve, the second single from his new album “Until The Rivers Run Dry,” which drops on the 17th of February ‘23. Watch the accompanying video below.
St. John’s Eve is the second single from Cork songwriter John Blek’s forthcoming album “Until The Rivers Run Dry”. It’s the opening track of what’s been described as John’s most ambitious and creative record yet.
The press shares how St. John’s Eve, the 23rd of June, is commonly known as Bonfire Night in Blek’s native Cork County. It is an old Pagan tradition that was later adopted by Catholicism, and it still lives on today, though as more of a midsummer celebration than an ecclesiastical endeavour.
John tells us: To me, St. John’s Eve depicts the excruciating nervousness and excitement of first love. We’ve all been there at one point or another with sweaty palms, heart racing, hands shaking, not knowing what to do next. Setting the song on Bonfire Night just helped to further the sentiment and offers a steadfast metaphor to lean to the story against. The song is my ode to very pure and simple first encounters—a sincere love song.
That rising intensity of first love is reflected in the luxurious yet frenetic strings of Colm Mac Con Iomaire’s that develop from relaxed long notes to weaving orchestral sections. At the same time, Irish Indie stalwart Cathy Davey’s call-and-response vocals add to the energy of this internal monologue.
The video was filmed by Eoin Donovan and edited by John.
