In celebration of The Mary Wallopers‘ announcement that their self-titled debut album will be released on October 28th, available digitally and on CD (pink vinyl to follow), they have shared a new video for ‘Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice’. Following the album’s release, the band are heading out on a major tour of the UK and Ireland, including a massive London show and a New Year’s Eve party in Limerick (see dates below).
While the song was originally written by Ron Clark & Carl Mac Dougall it’s long been associated with the Scottish folk singer Hamish Imlach who was something of a rebel spirit. In JP Bean’s book ’Singing from the Floor’, Martin Carthy recalls meeting Hamish for the first time at the Glasgow Folk Song Club. “It wasn’t a house, it was like a shack – where Hamish Imlach lived with his wife, Wilma. I walked in, and there’s Hamish and Archie Fisher and Ray Fisher and Bobby Campbell, all playing guitars.” In the same book, Christy Moore recalls that Hamish “took me on the road and introduced me to a host of pleasures previously unimagined.”
In Christy Moore’s autobiography, he relates how he first met Hamish…he was queuing to see Hamish. Hamish spotted him carrying a guitar case, stopped to chat and invited him in as a guest. Christy says that he got many gigs through Hamish’s generosity of spirit…that first meeting was the beginning of a long friendship that he says “lasted until he died in the first minutes of 1996”.
The Mary Wallopers’ delivery of the song is very much in keeping with Imlach’s spirited take – I’m sure he would have loved it…the video was Directed by Paul Duane.
