Outsider folk mystic Lee Baggett has crafted a new album of psych-country jams with Anyway, set for release on September 30th via Perpetual Doom. A West Coast journeyman of many years and sometimes guitarist for Little Wings, Lee Baggett began a new chapter of his eclectic and varied songwriting career with the 2021 release of Just A Minute, and he’s continuing his experimental streak with this latest full-length offering.
Delving deeper into Anyway finds some familiar sounds, but there’s decidedly more intimacy hidden in the crevices of his words and hooks. Throughout, Baggett uses his refined storytelling skills to share his relatable fears and coping mechanisms, his river-like path to unexpectedly finding love, and his musings on an ever-changing world, amongst other experiences. His conversational disposition, folk-styled lyricism, and emotive sonic backdrops make for an immersive listening experience.
Today we have the pleasure of sharing his video for ‘Run to the Sun’, the recording of which is a story in itself. One of the things I love most about Lee’s music is how it doesn’t bend to any folk tropes – it’s real and steeped in personal expression; there’s something very joyous and intensely liberating about that. Just surrender to it…
Lee shared the following:
“This song came about in the quiet creepy light of a pandemic morning. It’s about some of the various reasons behind the urge for the need to run towards the sun that is either dipping towards or rising from the darkness. One of the songs for the recording of the Anyway record, where the contributors magically converged for a weekend jam near the redwoods and rocky seashore. During the recording of this one as the musicians were wondering how the song went, the sky was turning from orange to red and the tree shadows were starting to take over. The jam went on while knowing we had to get down to the surf before the sun was gone.”
