While the name Hushman, the latest signing to Hudson Records, may not be familiar to you, it is the new project from renowned folk musician, singer & songwriter Ewan MacPherson. Ewan also performs and writes with Scottish Indie folk band Salt House (also released on Hudson Records) & Scottish Acid folk legends, Shooglenifty.
Some of you may recall that Ewan made his solo debut with Norther, which featured Vashti Bunyan as a guest. Although it was initially recorded in 2008 in his pre-Shooglenifty days, it never got a proper release, thus the 2020 release. As Billy Rough said in our review: For a debut, it is a naturally intimate recording but impressive in its ambition and range. MacPherson sought to capture that knowing and introspective ‘late-night moment in a kitchen session, or quiet afternoon with the sun at the window.’ It is at such points that ‘songs come to life at these times of inspiration and respect, honesty and beauty.’
That same inspiration appears to be at work here. You can still hear that attractive indie folk vibe his latest single, “It’s all in the Distance”, also our Song of the Day. In the accompanying video, Ewan is standing in a sparse-looking building, outside of which looms the Scottish Highlands which have no doubt also shaped that meditative quality you hear in his music.
Although performing solo here (aided by loop pedals), the album features several guest musicians, including Hannah Read, Lauren MacColl (Rant, Heal & Harrow), Ben Nichols (Seth Lakeman, Nadine Shah) and James Mackintosh (Shooglenifty, Capercaille).
