In 2018 Lush Fresh Handmade Sound and Mark Constantine released a compilation album titled The Self Preservation Society, a triple album of cover songs from the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 2019, they followed this with Instant Replay, 32 covers of songs originally released between 1971 and 1981. Their most recent release, again in triple
In May, they released ‘Life’s What You Make It’, featuring covers from the 1980s. We reviewed the album here and shared Martha Tilston’s video for her cover of Kate Bush’s Cloudbusting, the second single released from her no.1 1985 album Hounds of Love.
Now it’s the turn of Jackie Oates. Watch her covering The Cure’s ‘Untitled’, which is also being released as a double-A side single with the Afro Celt’s cover of Life In A Northern Town by The Dream Academy.
As Mike Davies said in his review: Jackie Oates teases out the folk DNA of The Cure’s Untitled to breathtaking effect, her achingly sad vocals accompanied by dark cello and keys”. She also does a great cover of Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me To The End Of Love on the album (see tracklisting below).
This record has been two years in the making and did not only start off as a continuation of the compilation album series but also out of Mark’s desire to support the artists Lush has been collaborating with for a long time through the difficulties during the Covid lockdowns.
