Last year, English folk trio Granny’s Attic released their third studio album, The Brickfields (reviewed here), from which we premiered videos for Devil’s Arch and Cruds and Cream. In our album review, our writer concludes: “With The Brickfields, they have secured their place as one of the most exciting and accomplished English folk acts on the scene right now.”
This accomplishment and passion for English Folk also cross over into their own projects – George Sansome‘s self-titled 2020 debut demonstrated how folk songs, stripped back to their bare bones, can be no less inspiring and exhilarating, while Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne’s Rakes & Misfits must have made many converts to the squeezebox. Lewis Wood recently released Footwork, his debut album dedicated to English step dancing…as I said when we premiered Kick Down the Door, “The standard of Lewis’ tune-writing is exceptional, and his playing is mesmerising. He is so wrapped up in those tunes, and they have a beautiful flow that engages the feet instantly.” We also recently spoke to George Sansome and Sophie Crawford about their Queer Folk project, in which they talk about the origins of Queer Folk and guide us through a selection of queer traditional songs and talk about queerness in folk history – read it here.
The trio have plenty of festival dates lined up this summer, including Sidmouth, Warwick, Moira Furnace, Bromyard and Derby Folk Festival (see below). The following video may have skipped past many of you -it premiered as part of the Granny’s Attic livestream on 25/07/2020 (back in those days). The super talented Alice Jones joined them for a cover of ABBA’s Does Your Mother Know folk stylee. By the way, you must check out Alice’s latest album with Bryony Griffith – A Year Too Late And A Month Too Soon; it’s out of this world. Anyone following Alice on Instagram will know she loves a sparkly outfit – so she was totally in her element here, complete with a disco mirrorball.
They had their challenges mind – Lewis’ ill-fitting hat, George’s non-edible pink wig…but then we had Cohen’s charming flower outfit…a total winner!
While those Covid times may feel a long time ago, ticket sales suggest they are far from over; our folk artists still need our support, so do try and get out to see them, buy their music and share their news.
