Son of John is the project of singer-songwriter Jacob Johnson from the riverside town of Bewdley in Worcestershire. Following his 2016 solo debut, the project eventually took the form of a duo with acclaimed double bass player John Parker (one half of alternative folk duo Nizlopi). For his forthcoming new album, ‘Each Second FootStep’, they are joined by drummer, percussionist and backing vocalist Jack Walker (GorillaBot). Naturally, this latest addition has become an integral part of the sound of Son of John, which can be heard on their single Lay Low.
Jacob tells us:
‘Lay Low’ came from a place of grief – I found myself wandering around a space that was once so familiar but now lacked something. Though many of the objects, trinkets & furniture still remained the same – it all lacked a much more important element: the human aspect, a notion of family, a protectiveness. Though these buildings & rooms will inevitably change in time – we are left with those memories they helped construct. It was also a catalyst for many of the other tracks on the record – forever reminding me of the question: Where – and what – is home?
‘Lay Low’ started out with the guitar (tuned CGCGCD) & vocals and, taking that idea to John Parker (double bassist) & Jack Walker (drummer) and allowing them to bring their own magic to the piece. The triplet feel seems such an integral part of the tune – which is held together by the rhythm section and allows the track to flow. Once in the studio, we had the opportunity to add flugelhorn, clarinet, electric guitar, viola & backing vocals to really embellish the track.
The video was recorded @ Muthers studios, Digbeth and was Filmed by Thomas Allan Wagstaff. The oil visuals were created by Joe Harvey Whyte and edited by Thomas Allan Wagstaff.
The trio’s playing has a natural intuitive feel with no one musician struggling for space. Instead, they enhance and complement each other’s playing while also building a graceful palette of sound, enhanced by the additional arrangements, that add vibrancy and depth to Jacob’s alluring vocals. Lay Low is also our Song of the Day.
Each Second Footstep is a testimony to the forward march of the songwriting skills of Jacob Johnson and the evolving sonic landscape of the trio that is Son of John. We will be bringing you more on the album very soon, but in the meantime, watch the album trailer, filmed in Eastbourne during the recording of the record by Toni Charles.
