Has it really been six years since the release of Cycle, the third studio album from Lady Maisery featuring Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans? That album was something of a milestone for the trio as they worked with engineer and producer Dylan Fowler to more accurately capture the energy, warmth and rawness of their live show. In his review of the album, Thomas Blake concluded by saying it was an album with “something to say about today’s world and is aware of its place in history. Lady Maisery are unafraid to challenge preconceptions about folk music but are aware of its cultural significance and its historical imperative. This album proves that they are worthy custodians and spirited agitators.”
While it may have been six years since Cycle, the trio have kept themselves busy, releasing more than ten albums between them in other projects, including their Christmas collaboration with Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith, Hannah’s Jigdoll album/project and duo with Toby Kuhn, Hazel’s Enclosure album as one half of the Askew Sisters, and Rowan’s solo album The Lines We Draw Together and Receiver as one half of the Rheingans Sisters.
In those intervening years, they have naturally amassed a wealth of experience, which they are putting to good use in the creation of their fourth studio album, for which they have just launched a Kickstarter Campaign.
The album promises to be something different: “These are all original songs, the sonic world is wider, and the process in which we’ve made this album has been totally different too: some songs have already been sung live to audiences in the last few years, while others emerged very recently and got their final lines and their arrangements in the recording process itself.”
Of course, with the loss of touring over the last two years, they are seeking help to make this album happen.
