In 2020, Wicklow-based musician Anna Mieke released her strikingly confident debut ‘Idle Mind’, from which we premiered the video for Warped Window. The Irish Times described the album as a slow burner (in the very best sense) that promises many fresh revelations with each return visit. A deliriously renewable energy source.
Today, she has shared her new single titled ‘Twin’, her first new music in nearly two years. Twin instantly engages the senses; her circling guitarwork creates a dreamy effect, a swaying layer upon which her poetic vocals shimmer. With the addition of percussion, the song is soon transformed into a hypnotic folk-pop wonder.
“The song for me, brings me back to the intensity of my early twenties, new people, relationships, places, and also the craving to be constantly moving, to be somewhere different… a perpetual unsettledness,” Anna explained. “The song touches on memory vs reality, and the romanticisation of certain memories. We have a tendency to over-analyse and over-describe moments too, which can take away from the actual time/event/experience we’re wanting to remember.”
The song influenced a visual idea Anna had, which she collaborated with filmmaker V Haddad, who’s previously worked with the likes of Big Thief, Hand Habits, and Katie Von Schleicher.
“Anna Mieke and I collaborated on the video for “Twin” and wanted to create a sort of portrait of remembering, Haddad says. “We visualized what might be the lens we use to look back and highlighted the imperfect conversation that happens between our past and present selves – with warmth and understanding. It is a montage of mental life and memory.”
