In “Baby, You’re a Gun”, the latest single from Country soul singer-songwriter Tami Neilson, she explores society’s underestimation of strong women and the roles they are expected to play. The accompanying video uses strong symbology to heighten that feel. Neilson, dressed in white with a striking majestic headdress reminiscent of a mantilla, appears omnipotent and regal as she poses alongside horses.
That cinematic feel of the song is heightened by the arrangements, featuring sweeping strings arranged by award-winning composer/arranger Victoria Kelly and the sound of a lonesome whistle.
Symbolically, horses are often thought to represent power, endurance and freedom, factors that this very song is built upon. Neilson doesn’t just represent resilience; she’s going all out, a force for change against the long-embedded structural and cultural barriers to women’s full participation in society.
The single is taken from her fifth studio album, KINGMAKER, due via Outside Music on Friday, July 15. While Neilson has examined “the politics of domination” in her previous releases, her new album strengthens that focus.
