The music of Mapache settles the listener into a comfortable groove from the off. Whether it’s that air of familiarity buried in their music – the laid-back Everly Brother-like harmonies or the sun-dappled cosmic Americana of Gram Parsons, their music has a simple and trippy timelessness that’s attractive and appealing.
Their latest album, a very generous 18 tracks titled Roscoe’s Dream, released on 3rd June via Innovative Leisure, is named after the band’s road dog, a 14-year-old Boston Terrier named ‘Roscoe’ who has been there with Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci since they began this whole trip. While Roscoe has inspired songs before, on their third release of original songs, Roscoe takes centre stage. He’s also the centre patch of the quilt album cover.
According to the album press, the band booked some time at Horne’s Lone Palm Studio and called in a handful of friends to play additional parts, including Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks on melodica and lap steel on a couple of tracks. The family affair has always been how the band likes to work, but this time they approached it on a grander scale than before, recording live as a full group in some cases, as opposed to working over Finch and Blasucci’s initial guitar/vocal parts. “It was a bit more of a band experience,” explains Finch.
Check out Tend Your Garden, the video made by Nydia Gonzalez. There’s no time wasted on the very lean opening; with just a few strums in, we hear the mantra “Tend your garden, you know how…”. Those are wise words, Voltaire would agree. More than ever before, we are so tied into the world around us…take some time out, go for a hike with Mapache…slow down and embrace the moment “..at the famer’s market, people walk slow…”
