Blink The Sun is the fourth and final in a series of videos/tracks heralding The Wave Pictures’ forthcoming double album ‘When The Purple Emperor Spreads His Wings’, due for 20 May release on Moshi Moshi and supported by a UK Tour (details below).
As we mentioned here, the four sides that make up this release are being made available at seasonal intervals in the run-up to the full release. The ‘Autumn’ was released towards the end of last year, ‘Winter ‘in February, ‘Spring’ in March, and now, here to herald Summer is Blink the Sun: A love song, flowing out of the previous track ‘Never Better’, about a couple on holiday in Greece, escaping family troubles back home, all the while cruelly aware they will have to return home at some point. Inspired by early REM.
Nina Garthwaite, artist, documentary radio & film maker, teacher & curator brings the song to life in her own special way with a unique selection of images…
“Almost all the images in this video are from a 1970s textbook that I learned to read and write Farsi from as a child. The numerous childhood images instantly lend themselves to the exuberance and open heartedness of ‘Blink The Sun’. An idealised snapshot of family and relationships that feels super summery. In addition I’ve used some sun-like coloured circles I printed, left over but not used when I was making the first video for ‘This Heart of Mine’ last Autumn. Linking back to some of the imaginary and texture from the start of this project, we have come full circle – literally!!”
