In 2020, Sam Carter released ‘Home Waters‘, described by Folk Radio UK’s Glenn Kimpton as his “finest and most confident piece of work so far”. Recorded pre-pandemic in a converted church in rural Northumberland by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ian Stephenson, Sam’s live acoustic guitar and vocals sit at the heart of the album. Sam described it as ‘a search for a sense of belonging and stability in unfamiliar territory’, he couldn’t have known how prescient that would turn out to be.
He returned to the album in 2021 and released a Bandcamp-exclusive live album (with Ian Stephenson on Double Bass, Harmonium and The Home Waters Quartet). It features fifteen tracks songs, including a selection from his back catalogue. It also featured a brand new version of the traditional English song Just As The Tide Was Flowing, which you can watch below.
A concise, cohesive and self-assured album that perfectly balances and blends ace song-writing with considered and finely judged arrangements, centred around technically accomplished and nuanced acoustic guitar playing. In short, Home Waters is a must-have.
