On his new single ‘A Prayer Of My Own‘, Nick Mulvey sings, “I do it for my own, my little boy, my little girl. And we do it for our home, if we do it for the world”. The future of our planet and society is a subject that weighs heavy on many souls today, and it’s one that also carries deep anxiety for many. With his third album, New Mythology, Nick Mulvey, without ‘spreading more fear or panic‘, hopes it will support listeners and “…inspires and stimulates new ideas, insights and ambitions” and “…generates a sense of the sacred within its audience”. These are all themes that have been at the forefront of his mind for a while now.
We saw that first-hand during his curatorship role at Cambridge Folk Festival in 2019 when he chose a number of forward-thinking speakers, including Mac Macartney, to talk at the festival. When we interviewed Nick, Danny Neill asked him about Mac and in his response, he told us:
“We’re living through times of incredible systemic collapse. It feels like everything is changing: there’s great crisis, there’s great opportunity, as well as, of course, radical uncertainty. What I’m proud of is on Friday with Mac, the hundred of us there – we sat, and we turned and faced. I think that’s a remarkable thing, in that so often today, we’re distracted in some way. We must choose to turn towards the uncertainty of these times to whatever degree we’re able to.
“Mac has this real wisdom. He talked about the ‘awakening of the sleeping giant’ and the sleeping giant would be the millions of good people who would do nothing in this time, who care but are not moved enough to act. He calls for a radical response through kindness, presence and all of us really asking ourselves, ‘What is of true worth?’“
Those are more than passing words, Mulvey is an advocate for change, and individual actions from people like him can have a positive impact and help shape futures. On 10th June, Nick releases his third album, ‘New Mythology’, through Fiction Records. Taken from the album, he today releases ‘A Prayer Of My Own’, which carries over those themes mentioned above.
While these are Mulvey’s songs, he’s keen to acknowledge collaborators: the friends and family, teachers past and present who’ve helped him arrive at this point. “I literally couldn’t do this from my limited perspective,” he acknowledges. He reached out to mentors –like the Polynesian ambassador and elder, healer and teacher Aunty Ivy – to check the cultural sensitivity and accuracy of his words. “I want to provide refuge for listeners,” he says, mulling his intention for New Mythology. “refuge in these times. The songs are not more distraction and are not spreading more fear or panic –they are about being deeply in this time. I hope the album supports people and I hope it inspires and stimulates new ideas, insights and ambitions. I hope it also generates a sense of the sacred within its audience.”
A Prayer Of My Own is also our Song of the Day.
