Following the release of her incredible debut album ‘The Eternal Rocks Beneath’, Katherine Priddy is heading out on a UK tour this Spring from April to early June.
In June last year, Katherine Priddy released her elemental and evocative, much-anticipated debut ‘The Eternal Rocks Beneath’. In his album review for Folk Radio UK, David Weir described the Birmingham-based singer/songwriter’s album as a ‘debut of true substance; it’s like searching for a simple shelter and stumbling upon a diamond mine.’
Katherine gave a fascinating insight into her songwriting in a follow-up interview to the album review mentioned above, sharing thoughts on Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. Of the latter, she said he “was a very important artist for me when I was younger. His lyrics are so heartfelt. I saw something the other day about how his songs are seen as very autobiographical, but I think he was often the observer, the shy man in the corner. His songs tell other people’s stories, just as much as they tell his own.”
In the same interview, Katherine offered one of the most valuable insights into her thoughts around songwriting when discussing Frank O’Hara’s book Lunch Poems: “I like the way he uses names, places and moments, and never explains them. So, you feel like you’re either looking at him through a window or walking behind him down the street for five minutes, capturing fragments of conversation. There’s something about that almost voyeuristic style that I really like. I think that’s what songs should be like, just a brief little insight into something. It doesn’t all have to be explained.”
Her album reached No. 1 in the Official UK Folk Charts and No. 5 in the Americana charts.
Following the album’s release, she hit the road with Richard Thompson again, played a joint run with Sam Kelly and saw the year out with her own sold-out headline December tour.
In April, she embarks on her Spring UK tour, which ends in early June (see dates and details below), but first, here she is performing ‘Letters From A Travelling Man’ live at St. Paul’s Church in Birmingham.
