Down to The Shore is the brand-new single by Irish singer Eva Coyle which follow her previous singles Mo Chuisle (January 2022) and When You’re Weary (November 2021), both of which premiered on Folk Radio UK. Down to The Shore is also the title of Eva’s debut album, due for release on 7th May 2022.
Despite sounding like a song passed down through time, it’s an original composition that marries musical influences from her native Ireland alongside Scandinavian influences inspired by her time spent studying and performing in Sweden and is based around string and piano arrangements.
Sean O’Dalaigh recorded the strings and main fiddle on this track which accentuates the yearning vocals of Eva, who also plays the piano. While as haunting as many folk ballads from the past, there is also an impulsive rhythmic drive to the arrangements spun through with some beautiful fluid movements that are also visually captured through the empathetic choreography in the accompanying video below.
Down to The Shore was recorded in Karlstad, Sweden and mixed and mastered by producer Brian Casey at Wavefield Studios.
In Eva’s words, Down to The Shore is a song about “the longing to escape a conflicting construct. In writing this song, I wanted to narrate something that captures the chaos of feeling bound by an environment. I wrote it with the hope that it would speak to the ‘unborn child’, the one who is yet to feel free”.
Like all the tracks we’ve featured from Eva to date, it underlines her musical sophistication and crossover appeal. If she’s not on your radar, then she should be.
The video was set in the wilds of Co. Leitrim and produced by French videographer Max Bandicoot.
