Taken from her forthcoming album ’Stolen Time’ (released through Outside Music on April 22), Canadian singer/songwriter Abigail Lapell has shared her visualizer video for her new album single ‘Land of Plenty’, which is also our Song of the Day.
Says Abigail about the track: “When the Trump administration first brought in the Muslim ban, I remember watching something about it and just crying; it made me think of my whole family. They didn’t have an easy life here. You get here and you have no money, you have nothing to call your own, but you’re still rich. It’s not about romanticizing life in Canada, or ignoring the ills of our society. We were just raised with this idea, that as shitty as it is, it’s better than any other place or time in history. This is the land of plenty.”
The resonating strings of a strummed guitar heighten the beauty and empathy that can be heard in Lapell’s vocals. It has all the marks of being a folk classic for the future, making comparisons to the likes of folk music giants Seeger and Guthrie all the more justified. Those hopes and hardships of immigrating to a new world seemed to be played out more frequently on our TV screens as many find themselves in situations they have control of as diplomacy and talks decide their future. I’m sure that the situation in Ukraine will be at the forefront of many minds when they hear this song today.
Produced by Howard Bilerman at Hotel2Tango Studio in Montreal and released through Outside Music on April 22, 2022, Stolen Time is described as elemental and powerfully evocative, channelling natural imagery and the revolving seasons to take a longer look over decades and generations, ultimately delivering up the present moment the way only the best music can.
