From the Broomfield Hill to The Twa Magicians, the British folk song tradition is filled with folklore, magic and occult references, something we touched on recently in our article on folklore and the Hare.
Folk Radio UK has teamed up with Treadwells Bookshop in London for a special online workshop (on Thurs, 17 Feb, 19:00 – 21:00) led by folk singer and musician Hannah Sanders. This class explores occulted meanings lurking in the shadows of the British folk song tradition. Hannah Sanders looks at five songs, uncovering their motifs of magic and folklore: spells, the Otherworld, the ritual year, enchanted animals and shapeshifting. She teaches attendees how to listen deeply, leads the discussion, and guides meditations. She leads the class in a knot spell, a herbal enchantment and a written charm, to bring music’s themes into hands-on workings. Join us if you want to go deep into the powers of the folk song tradition.
Recently signed to the prestigious Topic Records (more here), Hannah Sanders has been a singer of traditional songs since her teens. Over the last six years, Hannah has released three studio albums of folk songs to critical acclaim and has toured across three continents with her duo Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage. Here they are performing A Winter’s Night from their new album:
Hannah also has a doctorate in anthropology, has published on magic, media and parenting and worked as a university lecturer in the UK and the United States. She has also previously written for Folk Radio on Harvest Time here.
Established in 2003 and located in Bloomsbury, just around the corner from the British Museum, Treadwells Bookshop has become the beating heart of modern esoteric study. Their lecture series is internationally recognised as having some of the finest modern speakers and true experts in their field.
