If you think that it’s been a while since you heard the Keston Cobblers Club, then you’d be right. It was back in 2019 that they dropped their last album, Siren, a decade since they first surfaced and delivered their unique brand of acoustic folk that was steeped in a colourful, dreamy pop-nostalgia. Their live sets became hugely popular, delivered off the cuff rather than through a pre-planned setlist allowing the band to respond to the audience’s energy. In an interview from 2015, they told us:
“We often pick out tracks when we’re playing, and don’t write a set list – I call them out as we go! Generally the set will end up with a big old dance and that’s generally the hope at summer festivals if people are in the mood, foot stomping, swinging, singing … it’s all encouraged. Obviously we have some more mellow/ darker tracks as well, so we always try and throw in a bit for everybody – variety is the spice of life and we just love to play as much as we can and get the audience as involved as possible.”
It didn’t take them long to build up a solid army of fans who will be jumping for joy that they have returned with a new single titled ‘Mrs Dixon’ ahead of an April/May tour, details below.
Not to be taken too seriously, the story of ‘Mrs Dixon’ centres on escapism and the balance of work and fun in life. Matthew says, ‘We wanted to start the year with a slightly convivial track to put a little warmth into January. I wrote the track with the early days of Cobblers in mind, with our first ever single You-go and its focus on melody and harmonies atop of a stripped back instrumental.’
‘Mrs Dixon’ is the second taste of the band’s upcoming new studio album, following the release of last year’s surprise track ‘Find My Way’ (released when the Cobblers were touring the UK with Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot). Fans will be able to hear both tracks along with a whole load of other new songs live when the quartet kick off their brand-new UK tour this April starting in Nottingham on the 21st April. There’s also another European tour in the works and a busy summer of festivals.
