We kick off with a lively start, courtesy of Kate Ellis and a brilliant new video for her single Scars (out now), a love song with attitude. It’s taken from her forthcoming and much-anticipated sophomore album Spirals, which is due for release on February 4th, with the album launch taking place at The Betsey Trotwood in London on March 26th.
I’m sure many of you will recognise the venue used for the video below as the award-winning Green Note, an ideal setting for this song that makes you feel like you’ve just walked into a rowdy bar where two lovers are arguing like cats and dogs, but eventually kiss and make up. “It’s a love song with attitude, and I love the humour in it”, Kate says. “Also, how even after the endless rinse and repeat cycles of stormy emotion, there’s still love there in the end – summed up by the song’s closing line: “I guess this must be love, ‘cos we can’t get enough”.
The fun performance music video below was made by Benny Trickett, a veteran filmmaker in the world of music who has filmed, directed, edited, and live vision mixed iconic artists from Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Post Malone and Paul McCartney to the Who, Robert Plant, Kings of Leon and Pink Floyd.
Kate says: “We wanted the music video to reflect the drive and spirit of the song and I’m so pleased with how the live performance captured that. It was a thrill to work with Benny with all his talent and experience and a lot of fun!”
Director Trickett adds: “As soon as I heard the track I immediately pictured a band playing live in a bar. As a dive bar in Nashville was out of the question, we found a suitable stand-in here in London. I wanted to use a single handheld camera to shoot Kate and the musicians performing the song for a few takes and then cut it together in a way that captured the energy and attitude in the music. I’m extremely happy with how it turned out!”
They’ve got plenty to be happy about with this number; let it roll…
