Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada has been making waves way beyond her country’s borders with her hypnotic lyrical sound that carries a wealth of influences from traditional folk to jazz, often accompanied on the small four-stringed Venezuelan cuatro. Her uniqueness stems from her dismissal of musical trends, she instead follows her heart, a decision which has led to her becoming one of the leading new voices of a movement of independent female artists who have characterized Latin Alternative music over the past decade. I’ve no doubt whatsoever that she will be hitting plenty of 2022 end of year lists.
On her label’s artist page, there’s a great quote: “I’m making the music that I honestly want to do,” says Silvana, who can seem as susceptible to the power of her voice as her audiences are. “I sing my songs and I feel good. And the miraculous thing is that they make the people who hear them feel good too.” That’s so very true.
Taken from her forthcoming album ‘Marchita’ (21 January via Glassnote Music), watch her video for Te Guardo, also our Song of the Day.
Silvana also recently performed a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert for NPR which you can watch below:
