As some of you may already know from socials, the planned Martin Carthy and Eliza Carthy‘s Autumn and Winter schedule went awry when Eliza broke her fifth and fourth metatarsals, and Martin’s long-awaited appointment for a knee operation came up. Needless to say, things needed to shift (see 2022 dates below).
As Eliza says, “all of our Autumn & Winter work went down, due mostly to his necessary recovery time, and also Mam being a bit wonky too – in and out of hospital as she does.” She told fans, “we’re all in the recovery position now, and we can’t tell you how sad we were to not to have got to see your smiling (with your eyes) faces after all this time.”
The good news is that they do have an online show on 29 November: “The blessed Zoom-Fairies that are the Live To Your Living Room team swooped in shortly after our cancellation announcement and scheduled a gig for me and Dad to raise some funds for my shoeless children before Christmas.”
You can find tickets for that event here.
That may not be all, as Eliza adds: “Our thanks to our hardworking agents Alan Bearman Music, Sarah Coxson in particular, for their understanding as to our unavoidable predicament and for supporting this show. We’re planning a couple of musical surprises…sitting down, of course.”
Let’s wind the clock back…here is Norma Waterson & Eliza Carthy with the Gift Band performing The Elfin Knight. It’s taken from their 2018 album Anchor (reviewed here | interview here).
And here is Martin and Eliza performing “Died For Love” at Folk Awards 2014 (at which Martin picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award) – the track is from their 2014 album The Moral of the Elephant (reviewed here).
As previously mentioned on Folk Radio, Eliza is performing with Jon Boden as a duo for the first time – they have also revealed that support will be Lucy Farrell (also a member of The Furrow Collective and a fundamental in The Wayward Band). There are limited tickets left for THE WASSAIL! at Union Chapel in Islington on December 21st.
In other Waterson:Carthy news, would you believe it – Martin Carthy is now on Instagram, so if you are on there, make sure you give him a follow here https://www.instagram.com/official.martincarthy/
Here is Martin performing The Famous Flower Of Serving Men at The Albert Hole, Bristol on 28th Feb 1996.
