When we reviewed Folk pop auteur Dana Gavanski‘s EP Wind Songs (2020), Bob Fish couldn’t help but draw attention to her potential record collection…King Crimson, Chic (via Robert Wyatt), Tim Hardin, traditional Macedonian folk music and Judee Sill…as she sought comfort in the familiar strangers of her musical heroes.
The press for that release concludes ‘With an optimistic, steely-eyed gaze towards the future, it looks like Dana has no choice but to keep going, wherever the wind may take her.’ Today, she delivers a taste of that future via a slice of widescreen psychedelic pop with her new single “Letting Go”. Calling to mind the likes of Cate Le Bon, the single is taken from her forthcoming new album due next year and released ahead of her hitting the road with Porridge Radio this week (see dates below). Directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick and shot in Croatia earlier this year, it’s beautifully quirky, much like the song.” The summer’s almost gone, I never liked it anyway.”
Of the new single Dana says:
“It’s like a little mantra for me to sing, though maybe it’s a tad unconventional being that it’s not necessarily the kind of positive message we all associate with pop mantras. It’s more of an account of how the mind works to undermine us. It’s a subverted mantra. In the chord sequence I was trying to excite my ears and explore different melodies.”
