In 2019, UK-based band Provincials delivered their The Dark Ages album. In his review, David Kidman concluded that the “occasional almost wilful unpredictability of Provincials’ music…tellingly complement their unique combined creative forces.” This trend continues as singer Polly Perry, formerly of Polly & the Billets Doux, guitarist Seb Hunter and drummer & pianist Steve Gibson return this month with their new single Cold Fusioneers / I’m Not Dancing (22nd October 2021).
The single follows recent single Feels Like Falling / Outskirts (the latter premiered here) and all four tracks are taken from the forthcoming new album Heaven Protect Us, due in January 2022.
We have the pleasure in sharing I’m Not Dancing below, described as the ultimate comedown – a world-weary end-of-tether everywoman in a club who really doesn’t want to be there, and especially not with him. The song would sit (un)happily alongside the more downbeat melancholic tunes of bands such as Cat Power and Low, such are its yearning bittersweet hooks.
Provincials have performed across the UK including at the Purcell Room in London’s South Bank Centre as well as Ronnie Scott’s and Glastonbury Festival. Their previous releases have received critical acclaim across the board and they have been supported by DJs across the BBC network including on Radio 2, 6Music and Radio 3.
Heaven Protect Us was recorded with Dan Parkinson at Wooden Heart Studios in Andover, Hampshire throughout 2020. Seb Hunter is also highly regarded as an author, having published the acclaimed international cult bestseller Hell Bent for Leather in 2005.
