Next month (November 19th), Matt Patershuk returns with An Honest Effort, a track from the album featured on our recent Lost in Transmission mix here. On this new offering, you’ll find stories on this album about folks trying. In the face of unfavourable odds and uncertain outcomes, they give it a good go. Results vary, but all of them are better off for the attempt.
One of the attractions of Matt’s music is his storytelling level of detail, as he so aptly demonstrates on 1.3 miles a mystery involving fate or maybe luck. Watch him performing a special live solo take of the song, which features on the upcoming album on which he has a great lineup (more on that below).
Matt on 1.3 Miles:
Here’s me trying to get intellectual. This song is a story about the path of a bullet, BUT REALLY, it’s about fate (or God, or chance, you choose) and how we never know how close it comes to affecting the path of our life. Every day, we remain blissfully unaware of bullets that narrowly miss us or our loved ones and could change us forever. But they missed, so, whatever. Forward ho. Also, you should use a bigger calibre if you are going to shoot a coyote. Poetic license.
An Honest Effort is released on Black hen Music (November 19th) and is full of fine musicians making good sounds. Steve Dawson plays the guitar, pedal steel and Weissenborn, painting musical pictures that are a great counterpoint to the lyrics. Jeremy Holmes adds such fantastic groove, touch and taste on the bass and mandolin. Rock-solid Gary Craig lends wonderfully inventive percussion. Keri Latimer’s tuneful and airy voice is a great foil to Matt’s earthy one. Fats Kaplin contributes wizardry on fiddle, ukulele, banjo and harmonica.
With such a great lineup, this may well be his best offering to date.
