Following a two-week residency on the west coast of Scotland, eight extraordinary musicians will share new collaborative works and solo performances on a ten-day tour of the UK – with the release of an album to follow.
Making Tracks brings together eight exceptional young musicians (Making Tracks Fellows) from the UK and around the world for an annual residency and tour.
After creating brand new collaborative works during a two-week residency on the west coast of Scotland, the Fellows go on tour, showcasing these collaborations as well as solo works at some of the country’s leading venues.
This year’s Making Tracks Fellows are: Azin Zahedi (Iran / Germany) – santour, flute, Ahmet Ozan Baysal (Turkey) – baglama, Brigitte Hart (Australia / UK) – soundscapes, voice, Iona Fyfe (Scotland, UK) – voice, piano, Liz Hanks (UK) – cello, Robert Bisha (Albania / Italy) – cifteli, piano, voice, other Simon Leleux (Belgium) daburka, percussion, Thamires Tannous (Brazil / Austria) – voice, guitar.
Making Tracks is based around two central themes: musical roots and environmental engagement. We’re interested in showcasing diverse music from around the world, and believe that the collaborative creation and sharing of music is an ideal vehicle for bridging cultural divides. We’re also interested in environmentally engaged artists working with soundscape field recordings or sound art. Our environmental focus, founded on the concept of ‘reverence’ for the natural world, is two-sided in its approach. One side is practical, for example, developing strategies to minimise the carbon footprint of touring, the other is artistic – how we (as musicians in our case) creatively respond to issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss and embrace the imaginative power that we have to inspire connections with nature.

Artist brief / where they start – Making Tracks invites musicians from a diversity of backgrounds to come together, seek common ground and find new musical combinations. During our opening residency, which this year takes place at Cove Park on the west coast of Scotland, Fellows create several new collaborative works. They also spent time exploring and developing strategies for environmental engagement and receive professional development and career advice from a team of industry experts.
The Making Tracks live album – Each year we release an album of Making Tracks live in concert, recorded during the tour, and featuring solo performances as well as the new collaborative works incubated during our opening residency. Our most recent release being featured in Songlines Magazine, and BBC Radio 3.
