Self-directed and shot at home, alt-folk artist Sive today premieres her video for ‘Think Before I Speak‘. Filmed during the lockdown in early 2021, Sive shot the footage at home using her phone and a projector after a series of email conversations with videographer Laura Sheeran. Despite the simplicity of the approach used, there is a compelling strength and honesty that carries over from the song in her visuals. That conviction and honesty can be clearly felt…accentuating the feeling of claustrophobia, the inescapable feeling of being stuck inside your own head…being surrounded from all angles by voices of judgement – both internal and external – that keep you stuck and silent.
Opening with gentle ukulele sounds, ‘Think Before I Speak’ expands into the most developed full band alt-folk sound heard from Sive to date, acting as a strong and mature first example of the wider album release. Her polished and confident vocal as always shines through, that easily glides and soars above a bed of driving rhythm section featuring drums, bass and guitar.
Taking twists and turns, it is a song that reflects on the topic of chronic overthinking, and the pressure we put on ourselves to speak out before fully understanding what is being asked of you. Sive reflects that “it calls into question a culture that is obsessed with speed and doesn’t always allow time for reflection”.
This inspiring alt-folk songstress first won us over in 2019 with her single Do It All The Time, now this remarkable debut single, taken from her forthcoming album (due in 2022 via Veta Records), looks set to lay the path for big things next year; and deservedly so.
