The latest single from Texas songwriter Keegan McInroe is described as a reverse lullaby sung from the perspective of a doting parent, lovingly and reassuringly welcoming a new-to-the-world child to the possibilities, choices, and challenges along life’s uncertain but open road. Titled, To The Moon And Back, the accompanying mixed-media animation by Madeleine Mathis extends that theme in an ethereal starry night setting. Her handmade feel to the animation lends itself well against the poetic lyrics and gentle, soothing vocals of Keegan McInroe.
The little touches throughout the song, such as the pedal steel, accordion, and other slight instrumentation, underscore the song in its timeless theme of love beyond physical limitation.
The single is released this week on 10th September. Pre-Save it here: https://smithmusic.ffm.to/keeganmcinroe_tothemoonandback
Keegan last graced these pages with his 2017 album A Good Old Fashioned Protest, a stripped-back album that called to mind the likes of Townes Van Zandt or Terry Allen. In his review of the album, David Pratt said: “Despite the angst and often acerbic content of the material…McInroe still leaves room for optimism…one is left with the feeling that no matter how negative things may appear, a better world, even if not immediately beckoning, is at least feasible.”
With To the Moon and Back, he sheds a warm and inviting glow and delivers a stronger assurance that there is more light than darkness in this world.
And though I know this life is hard
I’ll be with you from the start, my love.
In a space that knows no time
There forever is your heart and mine.
I love you to the moon and back.
