Tomorrow sees the release of ‘Love By Night’, the new single from Singer-songwriter Ren Lawton – aka Conor Owen. Under this project, Conor combines elements of folk, Americana and indie-rock…although this is a new single, the song was written ten years ago. That young sense of adventure and innocence is reflected in the lyrics and the stripped back delivery where a couple’s forbidden love leads them to extremes to keep their love hidden in the darkness…”free from expectations and all we have to give”.
Conor tells us:
“I started writing ‘Love By Night’ nearly 10 years ago, just before I set off on what turned out to be a year of travelling around Europe in my van with intermittent gigging to get me by. I remember that in the months leading up to setting off, I was full of energy and excitement about the unknown possibilities and the myriad of directions that my journey could take. So the excitement of going on an adventure mixed with being influenced by some great lyrical storytellers such as Bob Dylan led me to write this song. It’s about a couple who spend their lives living in parts of the world where daylight is in short supply so they can get on about their business without being judged.
“I really wanted the lyrics and the story to come through with ‘Love By Night’ so I opted for quite a minimalist arrangement. The nylon-string guitar you can hear is a super cheap 2nd hand banger from a charity shop over the road from me in South Shields. I’ve had that guitar for about 3 years now and it’s really punchy when you give it a whack so I thought it would be the perfect foundation for the recording. I also wanted to have some Indie Folk / Americana flavours in the song too so I did my best to put down some Wood Brothers inspired backing vocals with some jangly guitars throughout to keep things light.”
Love By Night is the first single to be taken from Lawton’s upcoming debut album, due for release in early 2022.
The single, Love By Night, is out on 8th September 2021.
