This is a nice surprise for a Friday. While in Orkney, Kathryn Tickell paid a visit to accordionist and her pal Karen Tweed. While at Karen’s house, they recorded this performance of Lurand, a tune by Heather Woodbridge, an Orkney fiddler from North Ronaldsay.
As well as being a great solo musician, Karen was a founding member of The Poozies and has performed in many collaborations, including Anglo-Swedish quartet SWAP, a duet with guitarist Ian Carr, The Two Duos Quartet (with Andy Cutting, Chris Wood and Ian Carr)…and not forgetting, The Kathryn Tickell Band.
Kathryn is out on the road from this month with her band The Darkening; they released their album Hollowbone in 2019; an album that connects music and song with history, geography and people; music that transcends barriers, draws on ancient and contemporary voices, in a work that is as elemental as it is sophisticated.
Kathryn Tickell’s music flows so naturally you could be forgiven for thinking it’s plucked from the air – distilled from birdsong, a light south-westerly, and sunlight (or often moonlight); as natural, and as compelling as a waterfall. Neil McFadyen, Folk Radio
