While the name P.J. O’Connor is new to me, after hearing the New York native’s new single ‘Summer Squall’ below, taken from his debut solo album, Television’s Golden Age, I’ll be keeping him on my radar.
While he has a list of veritable collaborations and a background hailing from the NYC dance/punk scene this may not be what you’d be expecting. It’s an infectious song filled with gratitude and a gorgeous uplifting vibe that captures that ‘first breath of fresh air in the springtime‘ he mentions below. It’s an incredibly strong single and is also his third video collaboration with Emmy® Award-winning cinematographer Chris Cassidy. It will leave you wanting more.
Written while busking alone across Ireland, O’Connor shared some of the inspiration behind the song and the vivid, New York-centric video: “’Summer Squall’ is a story of finding appreciation for those rare moments when we are neither worried about the future nor frustrated with the disappointments of the past. We’re simply expressing the peace and serenity of just living in the moment. Ultimately, the song and video are about a city dweller’s first breath of fresh air in the springtime after taking a trip to the ocean shore. The challenges and burdens of life give way to the beautiful collision of nature and inspiration, resulting in a new feeling of hope while both honoring the past and learning to let it go.”
