DL Rossi’s latest album Lonesome Kind (available here), is described as a vibey, ‘70s-inspired album laden with Motown guitar riffs and soulful lyrics with a reoccurring theme of independence while mourning the loss of ideals and energy of youth.
Taken from that album, we have the pleasure of presenting his new video for the album single “Gold“. If you’ve never heard DL Rossi before, then you are definitely in for a treat; he has a soulful presence that puts me in mind of Nathaniel Rateliff, capable of turning up the emotional notches with little effort. The accompanying video by Jax Anderson is a timeless offering shot in black and white that looks through the mists of time to youth and innocence as well as touching on our own mortality. Rossi gave Anderson the freedom to interpret his song, and the results are both moving and powerful. He shared the following on the video:
“The video was really something I let (director) Jax Anderson own. She heard the song and connected to the ideas of how traditional ideas of relationships can fall short for many of us. The story of the video is connected to the idea of the song in terms of how we don’t get to control who we end up with and for how long. For me, that meant learning to appreciate the time we get with people, no matter how long or short that may be. We get little windows with people in our lives, and the more we can learn to appreciate that, the more we can find joy in our lives.
“Jax actually used her sister in law and nephews for this video. We shot it during lock down and space and actors/actresses were limited and I loved the ideas she came up with. It’s a beautiful video and it brings up our ideas of life and death. I feel that the more we embrace our finite space in the world the more we appreciate the people around us and the sense of community. We need each other and I hope this video helps people feel that.”
Of the song, he says: “This was actually the first song I wrote for the new album. I was super obsessed with “These Days” by Jackson Browne when I wrote it. It’s a tune about accepting our own limitations in life and what we have the ability to do and not do. We can choose to appreciate things for as long as they last, but we can’t control how long they last. When we accept that we achieve a loss of control but gain a good amount of peace.”
