Following on from last year’s Among The Faceless Crowd, South Carolina-raised, Georgia-based singer-songwriter Ben Bostick is set to self-release his new album ‘Grown Up Love‘ on 20th August.
Bostick’s Grown Up Love is an album that grew out of necessity and love. In February 2020 Bostick welcomed his second daughter into the world. Not only did they move across the country with a newborn baby, right before the world caught fire last year and work dried up. But they also found out in that Spring, that their older daughter, Carmela, was losing abilities she previously had.
In July, Carmela was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare and severe genetic disorder that affects all aspects of her life. In the midst of these global and personal trials, Bostick abandoned an album of portraits and penned a collection of love songs to help his wife and him endure this most challenging time. The songs on Grown Up Love are born from the experience of a couple that has been through the fire.
Tomorrow sees the release of the album single ‘The Diagnosis‘ on which Ben tells us:
“…I wrote it not long after we got the diagnosis, and the lyrics are stream of consciousness fragments that I later pared down and edited into the finished song. The crux of the song is in the line, “Just because you know the truth don’t mean that you know what it means.” It’s about the limits of science to guide you. Science delivers this extreme diagnosis with great accuracy, and then beyond that science is immediately useless. Science tells us what is, not what to do. Matter vs. what matters. So I’m pleading with God for an overdose of hope to guide our family through this time. Musically, the song is completely undynamic, except for the vocals. I had to restrain the musicians for moving with the dynamics of my vocals. It’s also harmonically static the whole time—just the same four chords over and over and over. The only thing that marks the different parts is the vocal melody and performance. I wanted the music to sound like the imperturbable movement of time, just flowing on its own while I wailed against its unchanging pace.”
I have no idea how someone finds the inner strength to create such a powerful song during such personal and challenging circumstances. Bostick has crafted a deeply moving and cathartic song that not only highlights the fragile nature of our existence in a big world that we struggle to understand but also the importance of love from which we find the strength to hold it all together.
Dreams are made of glass
They shatter so completely and it happens so fast
In a moment go from bliss to bust
The world changes so much faster than us
Grown Up Love is released on August 20th, 2021.
