I came across New Mexico-based artist Sabine Colleen quite recently on Instagram. This summer, she releases her debut album, Circle Of Trees which her bio states is a result of a growing connection to her British and Irish ancestry and the integration of a near-death experience in 2015. In 2018 she released an EP titled Call of the Year, which is available via Bandcamp. She alternates between banjo and guitar, and her quiet folk music takes inspiration from the likes of Jean Ritchie and Shirley Collins, who recently announced the release of her Crowlink EP. Her inward searching is prevalent throughout her music which has a warm and inviting sound with the essence of escape.
She recently recorded the folk ballad With Kitty I’ll Go for Blue Wall Sessions on which Jared Putnam joins her on bass for an intimate and ethereal performance. Her version is inspired by Jean Ritchie, who recorded the song for her 1965 album Mountain Hearth & Home. I hope that, come the release of her debut album, she gets more attention; she certainly deserves it.
