The Faux Paws are brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand, who grew up playing contra dance music with their musician mother in the band Great Bear and Chris Miller. Chris, who grew up in Florida, was enamoured with bluegrass and studied jazz before going on to play with GRAMMY-nominated Cajun-country band The Revelers.
Despite forming in 2012 and touring North America several times, a debut album has been on the back burner for some time due to their individual commitments to other projects. Nearly ten years on, that’s all set to change and the long gestation may well be the magical ingredient here for it is their eclectic musical tastes and genre-defying creations that make them so engaging. While the ‘raw humanity of folk dance and music traditions’ may be at their core, there’s a freshness and warmth to their sound that’s impossible to resist. You can hear this on their single ‘She’s Not Looking For You’, from their debut self-titled album which drops on August 27th.
The band tell us:
“Andrew loosely based this song on a friend’s dating experiences as a queer woman in western Montana. It cautions a would-be protagonist to think twice and check his assumptions before ‘making a move.’ This track has a big sky/open road vibe with a hair-raising, mountain pass saxophone solo in the middle!”
