Long For The Coast are Devon-based Indie-folk duo, Jamie and Sophie Gould. Hold On Brother is the latest single to be taken from their highly-anticipated album Revolution Starts at Home. The accompanying video below features the duo performing a live acoustic session of the song alongside Simon Walker (cello) and Stian Vedøy (piano), which carries a message of hope originally conceived as a private encouragement for a friend who was experiencing a particularly tough time. Hold On Brother underwent a metamorphosis in the recording process to become an anthem of universal support that encapsulates Jamie and Sophie’s belief that “music is community”.
The anthemic chorus feels genuine and sincere, one that’s sure to touch the hearts of many and offer encouragement and hope.
The songwriting process for Revolution Starts at Home (to be released in Autumn 2021) took place over a period of three years. During that time, Jamie completed a Diploma in Counselling. The couple relocated to Totnes in Devon; recording began in late 2020 under the watchful and inspiring eye of Norwegian producer Stian Vedøy (Firewoodisland).
Jamie and Sophie on Hold on Brother
“There’s always one song that just appears at the last moment in the studio and suddenly it’s obvious it must be on the album”, says Sophie but, with the initial inspiration for Hold On Brother coming from such personal circumstances, Jamie was, at first, unsure:
“The question of how much you share and how much you hold back is a question I’ve been asking myself for a long time” he says.
“You want to put all of yourself into your art, but then where’s the line in terms of being really transparent in the work that you make?”
Seeking the blessing of their friend, who, thankfully, is in a better space now, and realising that the song’s intent came from an authentic place of support and love, Hold On Brother was the last track finished for the album and the third single to be released.
