There’s no denying that Tom Rosenthal has a certain magic touch when it comes to connecting with his ever-growing audience, a statement that’s backed by a very large adoring fanbase. His songs seem to touch people of all generations, something I feel is as much to do with his positive energy as it is his great tunes and lyrics – he’s one of the few artists you’re likely to hear coming from my office as you are from my two sons rooms (who are still in their teens).
He has just released his new single ‘I Went To Bed And I Loved You‘, a song brimming with such positivity, for which he has created a very moving video in which his fans celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. While such a song could fall flat on its face in the hands of others, there’s a core honesty to Rosenthal’s delivery that just makes it work on a much deeper level – a genuine gem that you instantly want to share. It’s also our Song of the Day.
The single is taken from Tom’s forthcoming new album Denis Was A Bird, out via Tinpot Records/Universal Music on August 20th.
Denis Was A Bird was written as a reflection on the recent death of his father. While there are solemn moments on this album, there’s also great uplifting songs like this which celebrate the joys and happiness of life:
Denis Was A Bird has been produced by Fryars (Mark Ronson, Lily Allen, Mika) and the record quickly progresses into big, bright and uplifting songs bolstered by a 25-piece choir.
Most recently Tom has co-founded the charity Grand Plan with Marina Diamandis and Siddharth Kahjuria. The registered UK charity awards four £1000 grants a month to young artists of colour looking to realise a creative project. A panel of independent judges who are all established non-white artist and creatives themselves, including April Brown, Travis Alabanza, Nikesh Shukla and Bolanle Tajudeen, award the grants. Notable ambassadors including Sir Richard Curtis, Sir Nicholas Hytner, Alan Yentob, Tom Odell, Simon Amstell, Dodie and many more support the charity.
