Last month, we had the pleasure of premiering the accompanying video for An Bonnán Buí (The Yellow Bittern), the latest single by The Folkatron Sessions taken from their forthcoming second EP Home No More (out on July 2nd via Upcycled Sounds). Every single they have released so far has a unique feel and sound, each song drawn from a genuinely fresh perspective. They intuitively open up the depths of a song which is in itself quite a feat when you consider the many interpretations and iterations a folk song may have passed through during its lifetime. They draw out individual threads and weave them into a rich yet minimalist tapestry that enriches the song and carries the listener.
Their latest single, ‘Three Galleys‘, is no exception. The Folkatron Sessions are joined by Sam Lee, whose rich baritone is so well-suited to their atmospheric music. Co-produced by Upcycled Sounds, this proves to be a perfect match, sounding equally intricate as it does effortless and intuitive. In this classic tale of kidnap and warfare, they again manage to breathe new life into the past.
About the track, Lee says “This was such a great project to be a part of. The arrangement is definitely where I think Folk songs don’t go enough, moody synths and more experimental electronic soundworlds. It was fun to do something that stepped away from my usual au-natural light production style that I mostly gravitate towards – a pleasure to experience the tasteful but also very progressive style Folkatron Sessions have developed”
This is cutting-edge folk music….also, our Song of the Day.
Three Galleys is released as a single on 10th June. Pre-Order/Stream: https://smarturl.it/folkatron3galleys
