Emerging from the London folk scene in 2013 and built around the well-established boutique label Folkroom Records, seven-piece Alt-folk band Ringlefinch deliver a 30-string sound that’s both uplifting and unrestrained.
Four years in the making and entirely self-produced, Tall Tales (out on 25 June and available to pre-order now via Bandcamp) is the band’s first full-length album. Described as dark-humoured, wittily introspective lyrics set to upbeat, offbeat earworm tunes and a strong folk-storytelling sensibility, Tall Tales centres on themes of identity, exploring how we all tell ourselves stories of who we are to try and make sense of our place in the world.
Taken from the album, today we have the pleasure of sharing their accompanying video for their new single ‘Making It‘ (28 May). The video takes us on a surreal and trippy alternative world adventure, driven by a buoyant and joyful sound as some home truths of how we muddle through our daily lives. You are not alone!
On Making It:
In a world increasingly obsessed with success, it’s worth taking a moment every now and then to remind ourselves that success is just a story that people tell about themselves. “Making It” is an ode to the rest of us – muddling through, taking one day at a time, and basically making it up as we go along.
The epic third track from our debut album Tall Tales (released 25 June 2021 on Folkroom Records), the video for “Making It” tells the story of George, who longs to escape the responsibilities of everyday life and chase his dreams – however surreal and bizarre they might seem from the outside. Lost in the woods and menaced by creatures straight out of a 1960s Doctor Who episode (surely broccoli is supposed to be good for you?), George isn’t quite sure where he’s going or why, but is certain that he’ll know it when he gets there.
George himself is the protagonist of the independent comedy-drama film Making It, for which Ringlefinch did much of the soundtrack on its release in 2015. We were lucky enough to work with Richard Crawley and Stephen Glover here, who respectively wrote/starred in and directed both the film and this video. The film follows George’s search for love and creative fulfilment, as he examines his life and asks “Is this really it?”. It’s a question that resonates all too well, and one that we explore in both the song and video.
Making It is released as a single tomorrow (28 May) via iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and other streaming platforms.
