In November 2020, we premiered Life Lives Inside, a collaborative single from Flo Perlin and Pilgrims’ Dream, it was our first introduction to her on Folk Radio UK and were instantly smitten by her emotive voice which draws you deeply into her lyrics. Now Flo is back with a new single ‘Back In Time‘ which is released today (28 May).
Back In Time, inspired by the book ‘Last Child in the Woods‘ by Richard Louv, is the first single from her eagerly awaited new album, Characters, due for release in July. After reading the book, Flo became fascinated by the act of playing. This track explores aspects of her childhood growing up in the 90s, in a house surrounded by woods in North London where she spent much of her time playing. ‘Back In Time’ is written about children today, looking back to past generations when playing outside was the norm. The video, produced by Flo and Geraldine Glaser, flips from reality to animation, with a nostalgic sense of time passing and the use of the mind as a place of refuge.
Flo tells us: “Writing this track was a way of using my imagination as a place of refuge. It was a way to identify different parts of me.”
Like her voice, the song and video are sublime, staying with you long after the final note fades.
The single is available on streaming services now and can also be heard in our Mellow Folk Playlist. Back In Time is also our Song of the Day.
About Flor Perlin:
Flo grew up surrounded by an incredibly diverse range of music, which helped create her musical landscape ever since. She learnt to play the cello at the age of five and fell in love with the guitar when her Columbian teacher introduced her to the world of Bossa Nova, influencing her own finger-picking technique. Flo also taught herself piano and started singing at the age of 10 as a way to begin writing songs.
With musical influences ranging from Zero 7, Avishai Cohen, Laura Marling and Erykah Badu, Flo has dedicated her creativity to music that is meaningful to her. The new music follows her 2017 debut album Cocooned and 2019’s EP Stories, gaining support from BBC 6 Music (Tom Robinson), BBC Shropshire and BBC Ulster and Folk Radio UK.
From busking around the Middle East, USA, Europe and Asia (where she ordained as a Buddhist nun in Myanmar), life changed unexpectedly when Flo was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at the end of 2015, leading to her spending a few years in and out of hospital. It was during this challenging time she created her beautiful new album, Characters.
Since recovery, Flo’s music has kicked off, growing a larger audience of loyal listeners and fans.
